Beware of Malware on YouTube!

Posted: July 8, 2007

Your computer might be infected without your knowledge when you are surfing such popular video-hosting websites like YouTube. Usually no one expects to find malicious software hidden in YouTube files, and, therefore, malware creators realized that this is a very easy and attractive way to distribute their malicious codes.

Malware that was recently found in YouTube is an adware Trojan, known as Zlob.

What is Zlob?

Zlob is a nasty parasite that is installed silently onto your computer and displays popup ads offering to buy various rogue anti-spyware programs and other unwanted software. Moreover, Zlob hijacks your computer and web browser and displays false warning messages claiming that your system is infected with spyware.

How can you get infected?

Zlob can infect your computer by simply opening one of the fake video links. Once you open one of those links, your PC gets infected with the Trojan that appears as porn adware. In addition, Zlob installs a code that finds and steals all your personal data; therefore it is a serious threat to your sensitive information.

The most recent video that contains the virus is called "Hood Life". Also, a virus has been detected in the "Grand Theft Auto" mod video. It is still safe to view the video directly on YouTube's website, but if you will follow the external link posted in the video and download it, the "Grand Theft Auto" mod will infect your computer. The virus will effectively freeze your computer forcing you to reboot and continue to cause further harm.

How to avoid this?

Everything depends on the security personnel of YouTube. It might take hours while they find and remove the malicious files, and this leaves plenty of time for the malicious application to run its course.

Therefore, be sure that your antivirus and anti-spyware solutions are up-to-date with the latest virus definitions.
