The UnfriendTool is a Potentially Unwanted Program that makes claims of providing social network-enhancing functions. Contrary to its marketing, malware researchers have not found any functions matching the UnfriendTool's claims, and also have noted the UnfriendTool's past association with known adware distributors and fraudulent advertising campaigns. Deleting the UnfriendTool and all closely-related software from your PC is encouraged for the safety and ideal performance of your browser, as is usually suggested for any PUP that can't provide real benefits.

The Tool that Behaves Just Like... a Tool

With a strategy quite similar to that of other PUPs like PUP.UnFriendChecker, the UnfriendTool claims to let you keep track of friends who've 'unfriended' you on Facebook, but fails to give any such feature after you've made the mistake of installing the UnfriendTool. Previously distributed at the now-defunct site of the UnfriendTool.com, the UnfriendTool still may be in distribution through other methods, such as free software bundles on torrent works, and has a high probability of being installed automatically. Although the UnfriendTool is a PUP, rather than a threat, most anti-adware and anti-malware solutions should be able to identify the UnfriendTool or the bundles that could install the UnfriendTool.

Since the UnfriendTool may update itself without warning, malware researchers cannot provide a definitive list of all of its functions. However, the UnfriendTool is most commonly tied to unwanted advertisements displayed via Internet Explorer. Alternative Web browsers, like Chrome and Firefox, also are probable targets of unwanted modifications by the UnfriendTool. The UnfriendTool also has a close association with other PUPs, including SafeMonitorApp – a confirmed adware program that's been marketed through several online advertisement networks. SafeMonitorApp also has been known to make fraudulent use of the 'Norton Secured Seal' to make itself seem like a legitimate product.

Kicking the UnfriendTool Off Your Browser's Friend List

To keep your Web-browsing environment safe, malware researchers encourage deleting the UnfriendTool and any other software associated with the many adware-related sites linked to the UnfriendTool. Advertisements from products like the UnfriendTool may promote fraudulent software patches, threat installers, rogue system optimizers and a whole host of other PC threats that may endanger your computer, although these risks are not necessarily obvious at a glance.

Because the UnfriendTool may make various changes to your browser, uninstalling the UnfriendTool thoroughly usually requires using PC security tools that are experienced in deleting adware, browser hijackers and other browser add-ons. Even so, no matter how difficult the UnfriendTool might be to be rid of, malware researchers have found that avoiding the UnfriendTool installers should not be an extreme burden, as long as you scan all suspicious files and stay away from stereotypically hazardous download sources.
