Posted: June 11, 2010

The official Gmail and Twitter account for Reddit, a popular social bookmarking site similar to Digg and Delicious, was broken into by hackers recently.

Reddit has become a very popular social bookmarking site that users share many edgy or popular links and topics. Many sites or companies such as Reddit still utilize a Gmail accounts which was primarily used when such a company was in its beginning stages. That seems to be the case with Reddit, they kept utilizing the Gmail account because it was the easiest way for several people to view feedback received.

Reddit's Twitter account, which was recently hacked, primarily used the Gmail account as the contact email address. In addition, Reddit's Gmail account was used as an email for feedback. Lucky for them, no personal user data was transmitted using the Gmail account, only those messages received as feedback about Reddit's service.

The hacking attack initiated on Twitter which is not surprising because Twitter was the brunt of several attacks from cyber crooks and infections last year. The hackers were able to gain access to Reddit's Gmail account as a result of hacking their Twitter account.

Reddit has recently posted an update to the hacking situation on their blog which has prompted the service to update outgoing email to come from reddit@reddit.com instead of the hacked Gmail account of reddit@gmail.com. The good news in this case is that no one's account has been compromised. It is not very often that a hacking attack ends up with such good news.
