'almizepalplyu01[.]ga' Pop-Ups

Posted: September 10, 2018

The 'almizepalplyu01.ga' pop-ups are part of a technical support tactic ran by a website with the same name. The con artists' main goal is to lock people out of their computers, using the tactic as a scare tactic to potentially phish their victims out of personal information and/or money. The way this is done is through pop-ups that contain the following text, masquerading it as the genuine support[.]windows[.]com website by placing a pop-up image of the URL over the address bar of the affected browsers:

'Support[.]Windows[.]com says:
** Windows Warning Alert **

The tactic follows a classic social engineering scheme by attempting to press the users for hurry up by making grand statements, which inexperienced users would be intimidated by, and end up calling the provided toll-free number and relinquishing important personal information that could lead to identity theft or worse potentially. The fraudsters also managed to use SysKey to lock the initial victim's PC, using the password 'abc500' to block access to the affected computer. Users are advised to stay away from contacting the scammers at all costs.
