'Chrome search contest 2020' Scam

Posted: March 26, 2020

Online fraudsters are likely to be extra active during the Coronavirus pandemic since this means that many more people will be browsing the Web while being under quarantine. The increased activity of online fraudsters has not gone unnoticed by cybersecurity experts, and all anti-virus vendors are reporting the resurgence of schemes like the 'Chrome search contest 2020' scam.

This particular tactic has been around for several years, but it keeps being updated with new features regularly that are meant to make it more difficult to identify. The latest iteration was found on the page 'roanbours1.live' but it is likely that the con artists behind it are using dozens of other websites to host the fraudulent page. The 'Chrome search contest 2020' scam operates by telling visitors that they have performed the '5-billionth search' and are entitled to win a great prize by the 'Chrome search contest 2020.'

To make the fraudulent scheme appear believable, the con artists have included fake comments from past winners, as well as information about the last winner's prize – an Ultra HD TV. The visitor is then asked to choose one of the three hidden prizes. Clicking on any of the prizes may take you to a page where you will be presented with a fake prize, and then asked to enter shipping details. The catch is that these people will not ship anything to your address – they may end up asking you to confirm your identity by subscribing to an expensive service, sending a text message, or even be entering your payment details on their fake website. We assure you that you should not complete any of these actions because you will not get anything in return.
