'Critical Firefox Update' Pop-Ups

Posted: March 6, 2020

The 'Critical Firefox Update' pop-ups you may see in your Web browser are not there to provide you with a critical update for your favorite Web browser and, instead, they serve a nefarious purpose – they may ask you to download a '.JS' file that goes by the name 'firefox-patch.' This might seem like a legitimate patch, but you can rest assured that 'firefox-patch.js' will not update your Web browser and introduce any valuable features; instead, it will do just the opposite.

When the 'firefox-patch.js' is launched, it will apply minor changes to your Web browser's configuration, whose purpose is to ensure that you will see many advertisements while browsing the Internet. It functions just like adware, but it might be more difficult to remove manually since it does not operate as a stand-alone application. Thankfully, the changes that the 'Critical Firefox Update' pop-ups may bring are easy to revert by using a reputable anti-malware product.

You should remember that websites that claim to provide software updates should never be trusted blindly, especially if they appear out of nowhere. Such updates should always be downloaded from the software vendor's official page.
