Everything App

Everything (or Everything.exe) may refer to either a free file searching utility or a Trojan that is using the same label to disguise itself. If you haven't installed Everything intentionally, or see its presence accompanied with suspicious symptoms, malware experts would recommend scanning your computer immediately. Competent anti-malware programs should be able to differentiate between Everything free and Everything threat, afterward removing threatening variants of Everything automatically.

The Dark Side of the Program Called 'Everything'

Many threat authors may use randomly-generated file names or the names of Windows components as disguises for their threats. However, sometimes malware analysts see unrelated applications being used as masks. One of the most notable of these is a variant of Sality, a family of viruses whose members include files masquerading as Everything.exe.

The legitimate Everything program launches automatically with Windows but doesn't request Internet access without the PC user enabling automatic updates. This freeware product is a supposedly faster alternative to the default Windows file-searching feature and always is in the 'Everything' folder of your Program Files directory. By contrast, Sality, as a file infector, may compromise a wide range of files in different locations. Any unusual behavior from some variants of Everything.exe may be symptomatic of it being a Sality virus.

Some of the other warning signs of threatening Everything files that malware researchers recommend watching for include:

  • Unusual resource usage from unrelated processes, which Sality may inject itself into for concealment.
  • Disabled security features or programs.
  • Threatening Everything.exe files may use high system resources. The legitimate Everything.exe program uses under ten megabytes of RAM and disk space apiece.
  • Threatening Everything.exe files may open Internet Explorer or initiate network activity automatically.

Most variants of Sality also may include some functions for collecting information, which may lead to compromised bank accounts, theft of your identity and similar attacks.

Everything on Getting Rid of an Everything.exe Problem

Attempts by threatening software families to subvert the well-known brands like Everything have caused malware experts to caution PC users against trusting applications based on their names, alone. Ever allow a program you haven't intentionally installed to remain on your hard drive without analyzing it for potential risks and benefits. Programs that are showing the telltale signs of threatening activity, such as a Sality variant of Everything.exe, can be detected and removed by an appropriate anti-malware product. You also should assume that Everything.exe is threatening when in an unusually inappropriate location, such as your base Windows or System32 directory.

However, the occasional abuses of threats are no reason to avoid downloading free software from sites that have proven themselves trustworthy. Malware experts found no signs of the original Everything.exe or its website, voidtools.com, indulging in any threatening or disreputable behavior. PC users interested in an alternate means of finding their personal files have no reason to fear a safe installation of Everything software from an officially endorsed link.

Not all variants of Sality disguise their files with the Everything.exe name. Detecting this high-level threat, as always, should be left to appropriate PC security tools.
