FreakOut Malware
Cybersecurity researchers are issuing alerts about a new malware family, which aims to add infected devices to a botnet used to perform Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. The newly identified threat is called FreakOut, and it appears to be dedicated to infiltrating vulnerable Linux systems. The criminals behind the FreakOut Malware are relying on several known vulnerabilities to infiltrate systems:
- CVE-2020-28188 – concerning TerraMaster Operating System versions below 4.2.06.
- CVE-2021-3007 – concerning Zend Framework versions 3.0.0 and above.
- CVE-2020-7971 – concerning Liferay Portal versions below 7.2.1 CE GA2.
It is important to add that all of the aforementioned vulnerabilities are patched, and your system is unlikely to be in trouble if you have updated to the latest versions of the software in question. If the FreakOut Malware manages to penetrate the computer's defenses successfully, it proceeds to fetch and launch a Python script, which loads the threatening components. So far, the criminals behind the FreakOut Malware may have infiltrated over 200 devices successfully.
Attacks like the one carried out by the FreakOut Malware are preventable easily if you apply the latest updates to your operating system, drivers and Web-connected software.
