'Membership Rewards' Pop-Ups

Posted: December 29, 2016

The 'Membership Rewards' pop-ups are misleading messages that may appear in your Web browser due to several reasons. Usually, pop-ups of this sort are associated with low-quality websites such as pages that host adult content, illegal media streams or pirated software. When these pop-ups show up, they may use special snippets of JavaScript code to prevent the user from closing them unless they follow the instructions in the message. In the case of the 'Membership Rewards' pop-ups, they tell users that they have been chosen to win amazing prizes such as a brand new tablet, a smartphone or another modern gadget. Often, the bogus pop-ups may include additional messages whose purpose is to convince the users that they need to act immediately to claim their prize. To do this, the pop-up may state that the visitor has just 2 minutes to complete the steps below, or their reward will be given to someone else if they leave the page.

One type of the 'Membership Rewards' pop-ups asks users to answer three questions to get instructions on how to receive their prizes. Usually, these questions are as simple as they can be so that there'll be almost zero chance that someone will fail the short test. The trick is that after this step has been completed, the 'Membership Rewards' pop-ups may ask the user to provide it with information such as their name, address line, e-mail, phone number, etc. It is not uncommon for the 'Membership Rewards' pop-ups to ask the user to send a text message to a short number, and claim that this is a way to verify the visitor's identity. However, this is just a trick, and users who opt to send a text message may end up adding a few dollars to their bill since the short numbers used by these hoaxes may accumulate additional charges.

Although the 'Membership Rewards' pop-ups are associated with low-quality websites in most situations, in certain situations they also may be injected in the user's Web browser by adware. Unfortunately, adware software is difficult to remove manually, since it may use all kinds of names, and may be installed either as a browser extension or a stand-alone application. This is why the most efficient and easy way to make sure that the 'Membership Rewards' pop-ups weren't brought to your Web browser by adware is to run a credible anti-malware scanner.
