Meyhod Skimmer

Posted: December 18, 2020

The Magecart Skimmer has inspired cybercriminals worldwide to target e-commerce websites with other skimmer projects, which can be as threatening equally. One of the latest campaigns of this type is the Meyhod Skimmer, which appears to have been used against large cultural organizations such as the Chicago Architecture Center. Allegedly, the skimmer's code was planted on the organization's website months ago and it might have been used to harvest the payment data of hundreds of visitors.

While the Meyhod Skimmer functionality is not spectacular, it does what its operators want it to do exactly – hijack payment data from specific pages. Instead of focusing on expanding its functionality, the Meyhod Skimmer creators have taken extra time to make sure that their corrupted code integrates seamlessly and does not raise any red flags.

Cybersecurity experts note that the versions of the Meyhod Skimmer discovered so far had some minor differences in their code – this might imply that the cybercriminals are tailored their code manually to integrate it into their victim's site better. Unfortunately, attacks like the ones linked to the Magecart and Meyhod skimmers can be very threatening because there is little that users can do to stay safe from them. Naturally, avoiding to use non-trustworthy websites is the best course of action. Still, there is always a chance that cybercriminals might be able to penetrate the network security of a popular website or online store you use on a regular basis. This is why website administrators must take extra measures to protect their network and secure the data of their customers.
