‘Save The Children’ Pop-Up

Posted: April 21, 2014

The 'Save the Children' pop-up is a We-care.com toolbar enhancement to your Web browser. This site provides donations to charity according to your online shopping purchases, of which malware researchers have seen no signs of fraud. However, the 'Save the Children' pop-up often is seen in circumstances where the 'Save the Children' pop-up is unwanted, which is due to the We-CareReminder toolbar's automatic installation. You are free to make decisions about this software's usefulness on your own, but malware researchers encourage deleting any browser add-ons responsible for generating the 'Save the Children' pop-up that do so automatically.

Saving the Children... Whichever You Would Like to Save Them

The 'Save the Children' pop-up is the chief visible component of a We-Care Reminder add-on, which may be installed on Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome. Its format differs appropriately between browsers; for example, IE's variant is installed as a BHO, while Firefox and Chrome have extensions. This add-on claims that the 'Save the Children' pop-up provides 'free' donations to charities for each purchase you make with appropriate shopping partners, the latter of which include major, trusted brands in the online retail industry. Accordingly, some people may consider an occasional 'Save the Children' pop-up to be a small price to pay for saving the world.

On the other hand, the 'Save the Children' pop-up also may be unwanted, and malware researchers have seen the We-CareReminder program installed automatically in numerous cases. This distribution method bears the closest resemblance to similar methods used (and abused) by adware and other PUPs with negative side effects for your browser. When installing software that may be part of a bundle that could install the We-CareReminder, you should consider scanning files to detect the most well-known bundler utilities. Some bundles also may provide options to opt out of this toolbar, and, with it, its 'Save the Children' pop-up.

Saving Your Own Browser from Unwanted Pop-Ups

Although it is important to be charitable, this impulse never should take priority over your responsibility to your own computer's security. Any unwanted 'Save the Children' pop-up should be countered by removing the associated toolbar with anti-adware utilities. Although the 'Save the Children' pop-up does not include any third-party advertisements, malware experts do note that some privacy advocates could consider the toolbar's tracking behavior to be overly invasive. The We-Care Reminder program also has an uncomfortable history of being difficult without the involvement of dedicated anti-adware tools.

Pop-ups are not always identical to each other and may range the gamut from benevolent to threatening. In the case of the 'Save the Children' pop-up, you will have to choose how you feel about its toolbar for yourself. However, malware experts never would encourage the installation of any add-on that you do not trust implicitly, no matter how well-meaning its functions might seem at a glance.
