Urausy Ransomware is More Popular than Reveton Ransomware Among Cybercriminals

urausy ransomware overtakes reveton popularityRansomware has been an emerging threat for over the past year. Most recently, Urausy ransomware messages have overtaken the popularized Reveton family of threats to be the most popular ransomware on the Internet.

Urausy ransomware is not much different from other well-known ransomware threats as it purports the same basic notification asking for payment of a fine while traditionally locking up or preventing functions on the infected system. What is different about Urausy ransomware is that it is spreading off of the heels of popular exploit kits like BlackHole.

Ransomware, including Reveton, Ukash and Urausy, have been on the move in the recent months in their evolution to change behaviors. Basically, Urausy, possibly enabling it to dethrone Reveton as the current most popular ransomware threat around, has been designed to thwart the efforts of researchers to analyze it. After detecting tampering or a sandbox environment, the malware will then change its behavior.

The large Reveton family of ransomware continues to be a viable threat to many. Although Urausy ransomware is in its hay day, we may see the slow evolution of other similar threats. It seems as if the creators of ransomware are become clever in their abilities to give ransomware threats more exclusive functions, such as displaying one's webcam image to make it seem that they are being monitored.

The possibilities are virtually endless with what ransomware may become. For now, we know that Urausy ransomware is showing up as the largest dot on our radar screen, and we have the proper arsenal to take it out.
