Chromecast Can't Connect to Windows

Posted: March 9, 2021

Chromecast is a small and convenient device, which allows you to stream various content on your TV, and greatly expand its features at a relatively low cost. However, if you are having trouble connecting Chromecast to Windows – this issue may prevent you from streaming your computer's display output to your TV via Chromecast. There are several ways to try and resolve the problem:

Check if Chromecast is Connected to the WiFi

Chromecast's streaming features are entirely reliant on your WiFi connection, so having it malfunction is likely to cause all sorts of trouble. Make sure that you have entered the correct password, and that your Chromecast is connected to the local WiFi network – you may have accidentally connected it to a different one.

Restart Chromecast, the Router and the Computer

Restarting hardware is a commonly recommended fix for all sorts of trouble. This might help resolve the problem.

Factory Reset the Chromecast Dongle

A factory reset ensures that the problem is not caused by any accidental changes you have made to Chromecast's settings. Typically, Chromecast devices can be reset by holding the button on their back for at least 25 seconds. You will need to connect to your WiFi network again after the reset is complete.

Temporarily Turn off Firewall\Anti-Virus Software

Overly zealous anti-virus and firewall software may hinder your computer's attempts to connect to Chromecast. Turn off such software temporarily to see if it resolves the issue. If it works after they are turned off, then you might need to add an exception rule for Chromecast.

Make Sure that Computer Drivers are Up-to-Date

Outdated computer drivers may cause various issues. Since Chromecast is connected via USB, having an outdated USB hub or chipset drivers may cause problems. We recommend updating the latest driver version from the hub vendor's or motherboard vendor's website. You can also skip all this hassle and automate the task by using specialized software designed to keep your drivers up-to-date.
