Desktop Wallpaper Doesn't Load

Posted: March 16, 2021

Changing your desktop wallpaper is one of the few ways to personalize your Windows computer. However, sometimes users might notice that the wallpaper fails to load at all and, instead, they see a single-colored background. While this is not a major issue at all, it is still something that you should try to fix, especially since it should be relatively quick and easy to troubleshoot the problem. Below, we have described some of the recommended things to try when your desktop wallpaper doesn't load:

Check Windows Settings

Right-click anywhere on your desktop and go to 'Personalize' from the context menu you will see. Select the 'Background' tab and make sure that:

  • 'Background' is set to 'Picture.'
  • 'Choose a fit' is select to 'Fill.'
  • You have selected the correct image under 'Choose your picture.'

Try Selecting your Background Again

Typically, Windows creates a cached version of the image you select as your background. This way, even if the original file is no longer on your computer, your desktop wallpaper will still work. There is a chance that the cached image might have been corrupted unexpectedly, and this is why your desktop wallpaper doesn't load. Use the Windows 'Personalize' menu to select your preferred background image again.

Check Windows Power Settings

Some Windows power plans may turn off your wallpaper to save battery life. Open the Start Menu and find the 'Power' menu. Go to 'Power & sleep' and then select 'Additional power settings.' Find the currently active plan, and then select 'Change plan settings' -> 'Change advanced power settings.' Expand the 'Desktop background settings' tab, and make sure that it is set to 'Available.'
