Discord Won't Open

Posted: January 25, 2021

Discord is one of the most popular voice-over-IP and messaging applications among gamers and Internet communities. In 2020 it gained even more popularity because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the number of active users soared. If you are a Discord user, then you are likely to have encountered some unexpected bugs with the problem. One of the common issues that Discord users seem to complain about often is that the application does not seem to open at all. If this happens to you, then you should try these troubleshooting tips, which might help you to mend the issue in a matter of seconds:

Use Discord's Web Version

Suppose getting online on Discord is urgent, and you have no time for more complicated troubleshooting steps. In that case, you should launch the Web-based version of the application immediately by visiting Discord.com. It has just about the same features as the desktop variant.

Set Windows' Time & Date to 'Automatic'

This might sound like a usual fix, but many users are reporting that it fixed the Discord not opening problem. Right-click the Windows time in the bottom-right corner, and then select 'Adjust date/time.' Turn on 'Set time automatically' and confirm the changes. Try to launch Discord again.

Run Discord as an Administrator

Sometimes applications may not run correctly if you do not launch them as an administrator. Right-click the Discord shortcut and select 'Run as administrator' to launch the application with elevated permissions. If this mends the issue, then you should make these permissions permanent. Right-click the Discord icon, go to 'Properties' and then select 'Compatibility.' Check 'Run this program as an administrator' and press 'OK.'

Restart the Computer

Turning the system off and on again may fix many unexpected issues such as applications failing to open or work.

Check if Discord has Stopped Responding

Sometimes, users might be unable to launch Discord because the program's previous copy failed to close correctly. To check that this is not causing the problem:

  1. Open the 'Task Manager' by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Esc.
  2. Look for 'discord.exe' and right-click the process to terminate it.
  3. Try reopening the application.

Reinstall Discord

If all fails, then maybe some of the program's files were corrupted or damaged unexpectedly. The best way to make sure that this is not the cause of the problem is to remove Discord entirely and then download a fresh copy from Discord.com.
