How to Clear RAM on Mac

Posted: March 22, 2021

RAM (Random Access Memory) is, simply put, used to store temporary data and information about all applications and system processes running on your computer. Having more RAM allows you to run more applications simultaneously, as well as ensure that all programs or games will run smoothly. In the meantime, insufficient RAM may end up impairing your computer's performance, preventing you from enjoying your favorite applications and games. If you are running out of RAM on your Mac, then here are some tips on how to clear more RAM:

Using the Terminal to Clear More RAM

One of the easiest ways to complete the task is to use the macOS Terminal. Run the Terminal, and then type the commandsudo purge. You will be prompted to enter your password – comply with this request. Keep in mind that this is a temporary fix, and you will need to redo the operation every few hours.

Stop Unnecessary Applications

If you leave too many applications running at the same time, then it is not a surprise that you are running out of RAM regularly. You can avoid this by remembering to close applications that you do not plan on using anytime soon. Some of the applications that consume a lot of RAM are Web browsers, torrent clients, and messaging services.

Use Memory Cleaners

There are macOS utilities, which can automate the RAM clearing process and perform it regularly to ensure that you never run out of RAM. They are by far the most convenient way to clear RAM.
