How to Fix Apex Legends Crashes & FPS Issues

Posted: March 15, 2021

Apex Legends is a popular free-to-play Battle Royale game playable through the Origin client. However, many users report experiencing crashes and FPS issues while playing Apex Legends. Sometimes the problems might be caused by outdated hardware, but there are also many other variables that could impact the game's frames per second (FPS) and stability in a negative manner. If you are experiencing issues when playing Apex Legends, then the troubleshooting tips below may help you fix them:

Fixing Low FPS

First make sure that you are covering the minimum system requirements of Apex Legends – they can be found on the game's official website. Preferably, you should be near or above the recommended hardware requirements. If your hardware is old and does not match the requirements, then it is very likely that it is the source of your FPS problems – thankfully, there are still some tricks to try and increase the frames per second.

If you are an NVIDIA user, right-click your desktop and select 'NVIDIA Control Panel.' Select the 'Manage 3D Settings' menu, go to the 'Program Settings' tab and select Apex Legends. Change the following settings:

  • Antialiasing FXAA – Off.
  • CUDA GPUs – All.
  • Power management mode – Prefer maximum performance.
  • Texture filtering quality – High Performance.

In the NVIDIA Control Panel, you can also try turning the 'Shader Cache' feature on or off. Some users report seeing an improvement when it is 'Off,' while others claim that leaving it 'On' leads to better FPS.

When you run the game, open the Windows Task Manager, go to processes, and change the priority of 'r5apex.exe' to 'High.'

Troubleshooting Apex Legends Crashes

Game crashes are usually caused by corrupted or outdated drivers, which are causing unexpected conflicts and errors. To fix this, you need to make sure that both your video and audio drivers are up-to-date. You can either download the latest versions automatically or run automated driver maintenance tools.
