How to Password-Protect a Folder on Mac

Posted: March 25, 2021

Mac users can protect their files and folders with a password so that their contents would be inaccessible by other users of the computer. If you did not know this feature exists, then keep on reading to find out how you can make use of macOS' password-protected content:

How to Password-Protect a Folder

The best way to password-protect the contents of a macOS folder is to turn it into an encrypted disk image. You can do this by launching the Disk Utility and then going to File -> New Image -> Image from Folder. Select the folder you wish to protect, and then configure the format, encryption type, name, and directory where it will be stored in. Once the encryption is completed, you will be asked to enter a password, which can be used to access the contents.

If you wish to be able to modify the encrypted disk image, then make sure to set the image format to 'Read/Write.' This way, you will be able to use the Disk Utility to modify its contents by adding new data or removing old files.
