How to Stop Chrome from Opening Automatically on a Mac

Posted: March 24, 2021

By default, your Mac may start a lot of applications whenever it boots up. Typically, users prefer to auto-start software like Discord, Skype, other messaging clients, Steam, Origin, or other gaming platforms. However, many users report that their Chrome Web browser also starts automatically, even though they do not want this to happen. If your Chrome browser is also popping up whenever you boot up your Mac, then the guide below will help you to stop this from happening:

Option #1

Open the Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Users & Groups. Open the 'Login Items' tab and make sure to remove 'Google Chrome' by selecting it and pressing the 'minus' icon underneath the list of apps.

Option #2

An even simpler way to prevent Google Chrome from starting automatically is to right-click the app's icon in the Dock -> Options and make sure that 'Open at Login' is unchecked. You can use the same trick to either start or stop other software when the system boots up.
