How to Take a Screenshot on Mac
Mac users have several options to use when they try to take a screenshot, and many may not even know that macOS' integrated screenshot utilities are even capable of capturing videos, Below, we describe the most convenient ways to take screenshots on Mac:
Using Key Combinations
If you want to take a quick screenshot, then you can use the following key combinations to grab snapshots:
- Shift + Command + 3 to take a screenshot of the entire desktop.
- Shift + Command + 4 to only capture a specific area that you will select with your mouse.
- Shift + Command + 4 + Space to capture a screenshot of the currently active window.
Using the Grab Utility on macOS High Sierra and Below
The Grab utility is no longer present in recent macOS versions, but it can be found on macOS High Sierra and Below. To open it, you can use either the Launchpad or the Spotlight search. Once you open Grab, use the 'Capture' menu to select the time of screenshot you wish to take.
Using the Screenshot Utility on macOS Mojave and Above
Recent versions of macOS use the Screenshot utility instead of the outdated Grab. You can access it through the Utilities -> applications menu. Once there, you will see a small toolbar, which provides you with the ability to:
- Capture Entire Screen.
- Capture Selected Window.
- Capture Selected Area.
- Record Entire Screen video.
- Record Selected Area video.
