How to Uninstall Discord

Posted: February 23, 2021

Discord is a popular platform among online communitiesof all kinds since it provides them with a convenient way to chat, talk, and share content with other members. Of course, there are plenty of other software suites that offer similar functionality, and plenty of people opt to use them instead of Discord. If you are planning to get off Discord for a while and remove it from your computer, then the instructions below should help you complete the task:

Uninstalling Discord on Windows

One of the relatively unknown issues with Discord is the fact that its uninstaller fails to remove many of the cached files, including all images you have received via a direct message from other users. Because of this, the hidden Discord cache can grow in size quickly, eating up your disk space. Our instructions will help you get rid of all leftover Discord files and folders.

Start by opening the Start Menu, and heading to Apps -> Apps and Features. Find Discord in the list on the right, select it, and opt to 'Uninstall' it. Follow the removal wizard to complete the task.

To get rid of leftover files, press the Windows Button + R, and then type '%APPDATA%' before pressing OK. This will open a hidden system directory containing cached data from various applications, including Discord. Find and delete the folder called 'Discord.'

Uninstalling Discord on macOS

Just like Windows users, macOS users will also need to perform several additional steps to get rid of leftover files. First, quit Discord and then head to Finder -> Applications. Drag Discord's icon to the trash bin, and then empty the trash.

Open Finder and select the Go -> Go to Folder context menu. Type '~Library' and confirm your choice. Once the folder is open, go to the following directories, and delete all files containing 'discord' in their name:

  • ~/Library/Application Support
  • ~/Library/Caches
  • ~/Library/Preferences
  • ~/Library/Logs
