How to Uninstall Opera

Posted: February 24, 2021

Opera used to be one of the most popular Web browsers, but it has since become rather obscure because of the ever-growing popularity of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. If you think it is time to move on and use a more modern Web browser, then you should consider removing Opera's files. The best ways to uninstall Opera from your Windows or macOS computer can be found below:

Uninstalling Opera on Windows

Open the Start Menu, and go to Apps -> Apps and Settings. Find the entry for 'Opera,' select it and press 'Uninstall.' You will be asked whether you want to delete all user data associated with your Opera profile – this includes cookies, browsing history, cache, etc. We recommend agreeing to have these files delete as they would be useless. Continue by following the instructions on the screen.

 Uninstalling Opera on macOS

macOS users can get rid of Opera similarly, but they will need to complete extra steps to dispose of cached files, browser history, and more leftover files. Start by opening the macOS Activity Monitor, and making sure that Opera is fully closed. After this, open Finder -> Applications, and simply drag Opera's icon to the trash bin.

Return to Finder and select the Go -> Go to Folder Options from the top context menu. Type '~/Library/' and select 'OK.' Check the following directories for files or folders containing 'Opera' in their name:

  • ~/Library/Cookies
  • ~/Library/Application Support
  • ~/Library/Containers
  • ~/Library/Preferences
