How to Uninstall Unity

Posted: February 19, 2021

Unity is a popular game creation engine whose community provides tons of free assets that anyone can use to try and build a game on their own. One of Unity's big advantages is that it is cross-platform compatible, and it can be used by Windows, Linux and macOS users. Of course, since the application is used for game development, it needs tons of hard disk space to store all of its files, as well as assets that you may be using. If you have given up on trying to create a game with Unity, then uninstalling this software suite is likely to be the best way to free up a lot of disk space. To uninstall Unity on both macOS and Windows, you need these brief instructions:

Uninstalling Unity on Windows

One option is to open the 'Start Menu' and run 'Unity Hub.' Once the application is open, select the 'Installs' tab and then remove all Unity instances one by one by right-clicking them and selecting 'Uninstall.'

Once this is done, you need to take the required steps to remove Unity Hub too. You should open the 'Start Menu' and head to the applications -> applications and Features section. Once there, select 'Unity Hub' from the list on the right, and then press 'Uninstall.'

Uninstalling Unity on macOS

Removing the main files of Unity on macOS is a relatively easy task, but you should know that there might be some leftover files and assets that will continue to take disk space. Even though you do not need the instruction, it will help you get rid of these leftover files as well.

Start by opening Finder -> Applications, and dragging the 'Unity' icon to the 'Trash Bin.' Finally, right-click the Trash Bin, and select 'Empty Trash' to complete the removal of Unity. Once the main part of the software is gone, we need to get rid of the files left behind.

Open Finder, and navigate to the Go -> Go to Folder menu on top. Type in~/Libraryand press 'Go.' Once there:

  • Find the 'Unity' folder and drag it to the trash.
  • Open the 'Caches' directory and look for folder names containing 'Unity' – move them to the trash.
  • Finally, open the 'Saved Application State' directory and remove the folder 'com.unity3d.UnityEditor5.x.savedState'
