How to Use macOS Night Shift

Posted: March 31, 2021

Spending hours looking at the computer screen can strain your eyes and lead to some problems down the road. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to reduce eye-strain when you use your computer – one of the tools that can help with this is embedded in macOS' core features. It is called Night Shift, and it is meant to automatically switch color temperature to use warmer colors during nighttime and cooler colors during the day. Here's how to make full use of the macOS Night Shift feature:

Automating Night Shift

If you do not wish to tamper with the settings manually every time you want to change color temperature, then you need to go to the Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Displays. Select the 'Night Shift' tab, and then set the schedule 'Sunset to Sunrise.' If you wish, you can also select the 'Custom' option and then choose when macOS Night Shift should switch to warmer or cooler colors.

Using Night Shift Manually

If you do not want to use the automated mode, then you can switch Night Shift on and off manually. Go to the System Preferences -> Display -> Night Shift menu described above, and then turn Night Shift on or off. You can also select the color temperature to use.
