Mac User Beware of Rogue Malware Program MacGuard
Intego, a Mac security software firm, announced a security advisory alerting Mac computer users about a rogue security program called MacGuard. Unlike Windows, Mac OS has a good reputation of being immune to viruses and malware, but malware makers, and their need to find new avenues for stealing money from computer users, have apparently broken that "virus-free" Mac barrier with MacGuard.
MacGuard's website claims to be a Mac antivirus program which will "search your hard drive for Adware, Spyware and Trojans, clean your files, eliminate threats, and secure your privacy." MacGuard mimics the Windows rogue security software called WiniGuard which is known to trick a computer user into purchasing its program with bogus pop up warnings of spyware. MacGuard's website has the same look and feel as the website of WiniGuard. MacGuard is a clone of Antivirus XP 2008 and XP Antivirus.
Similar to other rogue malware programs infecting Windows, MacGuard hijacks the users desktop to display false warnings of spyware with the promise of removal upon purchase, and may allow other malware to infect your system. At the moment, the MacGuard download link does not work which is a blessing to unsuspecting computer users since they won't have the displeasure of downloading it to their computer. To Mac users everywhere: watch out for malware! Time to dust off antivirus or anti-malware program and put it to work!
Has any Mac user come across MacGuard? We'd love to hear from a Mac user who's been infected with MacGuard.
