'844-324-6233' Tech Support Scam Description

The '844-324-6233' tech support scam is a fraudulent scheme that works by tricking users into believing that their computer's performance and stability are suffering from software and hardware issues. This tech support scam does this by displaying a fake error message on top of all other Windows, and advising users to call 844-324-6233 for assistance. As you can probably guess, this number is not affiliated with any reputable technical support services, and its sole purpose is to help con artists to get in touch with potential victims, lie to them, and attempt to take their money. Users that make the mistake to call 844-324-6233 may hear all kinds of lies about computer issues, threat infections, and other problems that they can fix by simply following the instructions provided by the con artists. However, these 'instructions' may often ask users to subscribe to expensive technical support services or pay staggering amounts of money for low-quality PC optimization and security software. It goes without saying that no reputable technical support desk will promote their services via error messages and warnings like the ones seen in the '844-324-6233' tech support scam. Furthermore, reliable computer experts don't attempt to sell overpriced services and software over the phone, so you must never agree to pay for such things unless you are 100% sure that you are in touch with reputable technicians.

The fake error message used by this tactic contains information from a legitimate Windows Blue Screens of Death, and references the error code '0X00D1,' as well as the file 'gv.sys.' The advice to call 844-324-6233 is seen at the bottom of the fraudulent message. The fake error screen is displayed by a file called 'wincpu.exe,' which may get on the victim's computer via a broad range of methods. It is possible that this corrupted file may be distributed with the help of spam e-mails, low-quality software bundles or other threat distribution channels.

Malware researchers that analyzed the 'wincpu.exe' file report that it also contains a low-level backdoor that allows the con artists to execute commands on the victim's computer remotely. Due to the poorly written code, the 'wincpu.exe' process only executes commands once every five minutes, and at the moment it may not be able to execute some more complicated commands or scripts. However, these 'problems' may get fixed soon, and 'wincpu.exe' may be made even more harmful than it already is.
