BackDoor.Fiber

Posted: July 1, 2011

Backdoor.Fiber is a backdoor Trojan that degrades your PC security for the purpose of letting criminals attack the computer. These remote attacks can install other harmful programs onto your PC, force your machine to engage in DDoS attacks and other illegal activities, compromise the security of personal information such as account passwords or even make your computer inoperable. Most backdoor Trojans like Backdoor.Fiber may try to infect your computer secretly and act without being noticed, so there may be no visible symptoms of being infected by Backdoor.Fiber. Nonetheless, this infection is a high-level threat, and deleting Backdoor.Fiber with an anti-virus application isn't a chore that should be put off.

The Damage That Backdoor.Fiber Can Wreak

Trojans like Backdoor.Fiber typically make use of Windows Registry exploits to launch themselves without permission whenever Windows starts. Relatively sophisticated Trojans may even inject their code into native memory processes or use the names of normal Windows components like svchost.exe to avoid being seen in Task Manager. Backdoor.Fiber and similar Trojans can run as good as invisibly, but this doesn't indicate that their attacks aren't potentially severe:

  • Backdoor.Fiber may disable your firewall and other security-related applications, including anti-virus software and basic Windows utilities like Task Manager. You may even receive a fake pop-up alert that warns you about the program being infected.
  • Backdoor.Fiber may allow your security to remain active, but alter settings to allow Backdoor.Fiber and other threats to ignore your security setup. Common methods of doing this involve opening network ports and adding exceptions to the Windows Firewall.
  • After getting around your security, Backdoor.Fiber may download and install other malicious applications onto your PC. This can include password-thieving keyloggers, threats that fake anti-virus functions and Remote Administration Tools that allow criminals to control your PC.

Preventing Backdoor.Fiber from Doing its Worst Damage

In addition to all of Backdoor.Fiber's other functions, Backdoor.Fiber has also been reported to infect other files with Backdoor.Fiber's own malicious code. This can damage the files that have been infected and let Backdoor.Fiber spread to other computers and areas of your PC. In extreme cases, Backdoor.Fiber may even deliberately or accidentally damage system components, making your PC unable to function.

You should use an appropriate anti-virus software to delete Backdoor.Fiber from your PC, since detecting and removing Backdoor.Fiber components without missing any of them can be difficult. Many of the attacks noted earlier use the Windows Registry to function, and damage to the Registry can require a complete reinstallation of Windows to be fixed.

Disabling Flash and JavaScript for untrustworthy websites, updating your browser and security software, avoiding illegal file sources and keeping stringent network security, can help you avoid being attacked by Backdoor.Fiber. Avoid any attempts to remove Backdoor.Fiber without help, unless there's no other resort.
