Backdoor.Frauder

Posted: June 30, 2011

Backdoor.Frauder is both a backdoor Trojan and, in some cases, an unintentional false positive that's created by certain types of legitimate anti-spyware programs. If you think you have Backdoor.Frauder on your PC, look for the relevant symptoms to determine which type of Backdoor.Frauder problem you're dealing with and take appropriate actions if removing Backdoor.Frauder turns out to be necessary. Since real Backdoor.Frauder infections are serious security threats that may endanger your finances, your personal information and your PC, you should never allow a potential or real Backdoor.Frauder infection to remain on your computer for any length of time.

Following Backdoor.Frauder's Clues Back to Your PC Security Breach

Just like other backdoor Trojans that SpywareRemove.com security researchers have observed, Backdoor.Frauder tries to sneak onto your PC by dishonest methods, such as by pretending to be a codec or web browser update. Backdoor.Frauder is also reminiscent of Backdoor.Cycbot!gen4, Backdoor.Win32.Agent.bimm and many other backdoor Trojans, due to its similar exploitation of Windows Registry startup entries. This allows Backdoor.Frauder to launch itself without your consent whenever Windows loads, although you may be able to detect Backdoor.Frauder by the symptoms that are listed below.

  • SpywareRemove.com malware analysts have found that Backdoor.Frauder, in a move similar to that of Fake Microsoft Security Essentials Alert's tactics, will create fake infection warnings before Backdoor.Frauder tries to install other malicious programs such as rogue anti-virus products. One example of Backdoor.Frauder's fake errors is shown here:

    "Attn! Critical System Warning

Critical System Warning! Your system is probably infected with a version of Spyware.IEPass.thief. This may result in website access passwords being stolen from Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Outlook etc. Click Yes to scan and remove threats. (recommend)"

  • Many variants of Backdoor.Frauder will create semi-randomly-named .exe files such as 'YUR1.exe' that can be seen in Task Manager. These Backdoor.Frauder files will constantly run unless you use anti-malware tactics, such as rebooting into Safe Mode, to disable them.
  • Backdoor.Frauder has also been caught creating pornographic shortcuts that may be used to make it look as though other types of infections are on your PC. SpywareRemove.com malware researchers have found that, in many cases, these links can redirect you to malicious or fraudulent websites, and using them isn't advised.
  • Lastly, all backdoor Trojans such as Backdoor.Frauder will attempt to alter your network and security settings to allow remote attackers to control your PC. You can detect these problems by watching for open network ports, disabled network or security programs or features, or exceptions that have been added to your firewall without your permission.

When a Backdoor.Frauder Isn't Something to Worry About?

Although a real Backdoor.Frauder Trojan is a serious problem, there are also cases where a Backdoor.Frauder detection is inaccurate. SpywareRemove.com research team has found that the majority of these false positives are created accidentally by anti-spyware products like Spyware Doctor. If you think that such a program is giving you a fake Backdoor.Frauder error, check the file to make sure that it's really uninfected, and change it to be an ignorable exception.

However, don't hesitate to delete a real Backdoor.Frauder Trojan if you find one, since actual Backdoor.Frauder infections can allow criminals to control your computer and violate its safety, privacy and security at will. In such circumstances, the use of an anti-malware product to remove Backdoor.Frauder is strongly encouraged.
