Dark Bot

Posted: March 28, 2006

The Trojan Dark Bot is designed to infect computers and exploit vulnerabilities in Internet Relay Chat (or IRC) applications. Dark Bot may have keylogger functions that allow Dark Bot to steal passwords, and is likely to use infected machines to spam itself or other malware for propagation. Users have also reported that Dark Bot and related malware may block Internet access entirely. Some sources also attest to Dark Bot being able to damage or destroy important system components on the infected PC, which makes removing Dark Bot a high-level priority task for any computer user.

Trojan Dark Bot is Truly a Dark PC Threat

Trojans like Dark Bot can infect computers through hostile websites, through malicious advertisements and by bundling themselves with larger application files on freeware sites and peer to peer networks. Users have reported the following types of attacks related to the confirmed presence of Dark Bot on their PCs:

  • Blocked Internet access. Dark Bot and related malware may prevent you from accessing any online functions at all, including email and browsing websites.
  • Keylogging. Dark Bot may record keystrokes from your keyboard in an attempt to steal sensitive information like account user names and passwords. Keyloggers like Dark Bot don't need you to save the information before they have access to it!
  • Taking over your PC to send spam. Dark Bot may use your accounts or system resources to send out vast quantities of automated messages containing links to malicious software or websites.

Other attacks associated with Trojans similar to Dark Bot include blocked security applications, deactivated firewalls and other safety measures and the unauthorized download of more malware.

Shed Some Light on Dark Bot

Removing Dark Bot can be difficult if the Trojan has gone so far as to disable your Internet access! Tapping F8 while rebooting your computer will let you access Safe Mode with Networking in the standard Windows startup menu. Most malware like Dark Bot that lack root-level access will be stopped from running in this mode, so you can download and update anything necessary to remove Dark Bot.

Dark Bot's running process in memory may not be hidden, and you can attempt to shut it down from Task Manager if the process is visibly active. This may not prevent Dark Bot from meddling in your system scans and other attempts to delete Dark Bot, however, which is why using a boot option that prevents Dark Bot from starting at all is best.

In no cases should you just keep on using your PC with a Dark Bot infection, since this Trojan can access personal information and hijack your computer for malicious ends until you kick Dark Bot out!
