Installpedia
Installpedia is an adware program that displays advertisements on your PC, as well as using your PC to send out spam email messages. In some cases, Installpedia may also show Trojans functionality by downloading and installing potentially malicious programs without your consent. Although Installpedia's baseline functions aren't a top-priority threat to your PC, any Installpedia infection is still potentially very hazardous if allowed to remain on your computer for a significant length of time. You can delete Installpedia with any proper anti-virus program, although the recent nature of Installpedia may necessitate updates for Installpedia to be detected and removed.
Installpedia: the Friendly Adware with Unfriendly Advertisements
Installpedia infections can occur in a variety of ways, but are often connected to the executable file named networker.exe. This file may be sent out in the form of an email file attachment or link by Installpedia-infected PCs. Installation via Flash or JavaScript exploits is also a possibility. Installpedia was first seen early in 2011 and may be able to avoid being detected by out of date anti-malware software; keep your security software's threat definitions updated to lower this risk.
Underneath the friendly-sounding name, Installpedia is nothing more than one long commercial that's forced onto your PC, regardless of whether you like it or not. Installpedia acquires its advertisement displays by contacting the fr.ws.ip-ntwk.com website, a site that's known to have a poor reputation and a history with malicious programs.
It's strongly encouraged for you to disable JavaScript and Flash for any advertisement that Installpedia may force you to see, since these scripts are common ways of installing other hostile applications onto your PC.
Installpedia's Hiddem Mail System and Trojans Attacks
Though classified as adware, Installpedia can also perform functions in other areas:
- Installpedia may connect to websites to gather lists of email addresses and then send out spam messages. Even though Installpedia is using your computer to send this spam, you will not see the messages appearing in your mailbox, since Installpedia uses a built-in SMTP client for email purposes.
- Installpedia can also download and install other hostile programs without your consent, a la Trojans behavior. These programs can include other Trojans and adware, worms, viruses, ransomware or keyloggers, amongst other possibilities.
Besides Installpedia's difficult-to-overlook advertisements, Installpedia may not show other signs of being installed on your PC. To avoid a possible Installpedia infection, never use links or file attachments, unless you've confirmed that they're safe, even if they seem to be sent by someone you know. Installpedia was also first seen around April of 2011 and may be missed by out of date security software; always keep your anti-virus programs updated for the best chance of removing Installpedia and other new PC threats.
