Opera Hoax

Posted: April 6, 2011

Opera Hoax is a fake Opera installer that contains yet-to-be-determined malicious functions. Since the rogue security program Opera Hoax bears the Trojan identification in many cases, Opera Hoax may be able to download other malware onto your PC, disable security functions and applications or allow remote attackers to exert control over the system. The Opera Hoax file may also attempt to extract money from you during the installation process by requesting premium number text messages or phone calls. As long as you refrain from downloading Opera from unauthorized sources, you should never have to deal with infection by the Opera Hoax.

Don't Visit the Opera Hoax Opera House

Opera Hoax is a scam of Russian origin that mimics the outer appearance of an Opera installer very precisely. The fake installation interface for Opera Hoax is divided between Russian and English linguistics, with the former predominating outside of the English User License Agreement.

Trying to install Opera Hoax may result in your being urged to send an SMS text message or call to a premium number that requires money to be used. This is a prime indicator of Opera Hoax's malware nature, since the real Opera is free and will never ask for money through such suspicious transaction methods.

If you've already made a transaction with Opera Hoax, speak with your phone company. They may be willing to cancel the charge in the case of such a clearly fraudulent transaction.

Canceling the Opera Hoax's Fake Opera

Although Opera Hoax is a rogue security program in infection methods, Opera Hoax is identified as a Trojan in some cases. Different scanners may identify Opera Hoax as Artemis!9557C35B1D02, Win32/Hoax.ArchSMS.FN, Trojan.Win32.FakeAV, Trojan.SMSSend.374 and Win32:FraudTool-SP, among other possibilities. Trojan infections are able to download other malware onto your machine, pave the way for attacks by remote criminals and generally tamper with your PC security.

Regardless of what other threats Opera Hoax may contain, you should remove Opera Hoax from your computer as quickly as you can manage. Deleting malware like Opera Hoax is best done by using anti-malware programs, since manual deletion will often result in undesirable side effects for your PC. Check on updates before you scan, since Opera Hoax is extremely new and may be undetectable if your anti-malware product updates aren't fully downloaded.
