Security Toolbar

Posted: October 16, 2007

Security Toolbar is an Internet Explorer toolbar-based Trojan with a wide range of mostly browser-centric attacks, such as causing pop-ups and hijacking your browser to dangerous websites. There are usually clear visual indications of Security Toolbar infecting your browser, which allows you to respond to the threat rapidly. Because this Trojan may be able to cause serious damage to your system and violates your privacy and security, you should delete Security Toolbar rather than treating it as a helpful accessory.

Four Reasons Why You Don't Want Security Toolbar Attached to Your Browser

Trojan-based infections like Security Toolbar will usually be installed on your computer through secretive or simply deceptive means that make it hard to tell what you're installing. Security Toolbar will not hide itself once Security Toolbar is on your system, though, and will instead choose to make its presence prominently indicated. If you see an exclamation point surrounded by a yellow triangle at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, you may have Security Toolbar or a similar infection. Here are some of the major problems Security Toolbar is capable of inflicting:

  • Frequent pop-ups. These contain links to websites that can install other malware or steal personal information and money.
  • Altered website content containing more links to those same malicious sites.
  • Security Toolbar may also cut out the middleman and just hijack your browser to force you to the website it wants you to see. This can be accomplished through advertising and falsified alerts that block out legitimate website content.
  • Security Toolbar may also download other kinds of malware and install them automatically, or merely reduce your security to make you vulnerable to further attacks.

Giving Security Toolbar the Boot

Although you can temporarily disable Security Toolbar through the Manage Add-ons section of the Internet Explorer interface, actually removing Security Toolbar can be a little trickier. Deleting Security Toolbar manually, or using a general purpose anti-malware scanner may not remove Security Toolbar fully. The system restore function may also be abused to restore Security Toolbar to perfect health.

There is a silver lining, however, because Security Toolbar is a well-known threat at this point, there are many different tools that can target and remove this Trojan specifically. It is also know that some particular brands of popular scanners are capable to remove Security Toolbar completely, if they're provided with all necessary updates.

Stay calm and patient while dealing with Security Toolbar, since Security Toolbar will resist your deletion attempts. If you persist in removing Security Toolbar carefully and thoroughly your computer is unlikely to suffer long term or serious damage.
