Spammit
Spammit is a Trojan that uses the infected PC to send spam email messages. A Spammit infection may also attempt to steal private information, including account passwords, or enable remote attackers to assault your computer. Although Spammit isn't a recent threat, any Spammit infection is still a danger to your PC security and privacy. Removing Spammit should involve the use of competent anti-virus programs, since deleting visible Spammit files may not remove all components of a Spammit threat.
Spammit: Not the Kind of Spam You Want to Indulge In
Spammit gets its name from Spammit's tendency to use infected computers to send spam email messages to other PCs. These messages may contain file attachments of Spammit itself or links to Spammit or other malicious files. Spammit was first seen in 2006, and the majority of reported Spammit infections take place in that year, but Spammit may still be in circulation and a potential threat.
Spammit is also known by the aliases Spammit.H and SpamTool.Win32.Delf.m.
Like almost every other spam-oriented Trojan, Spammit uses an internal email engine to send out messages. This means that you'll never see the messages that Spammit sends in your normal email account's mailbox. Spammit uses standard startup Registry entry tactics to launch itself without your permission, and you should work under the assumption that Spammit is active unless you've specifically taken action to stop this.
Spammit email activities may slow down your PC by consuming excessive memory and other resources, but other signs of Spammit infection may be scarce.
Spammit – More Than Just a Spammer
Regrettably, Spammit can also launch other attacks that are even more serious than Spammit's standard spamming activities. Some known Spammit attacks include:
- Stealing personal information from your computer. Spammit may grab up your account passwords, credit card numbers or even record anything that's typed on your keyboard.
- A general attack on your network security. Spammit may open ports, disable or add exceptions to your firewall, delete Registry entries for security programs or otherwise neuter your network defenses. This allows Spammit to send Spammit's stolen information to remote criminals.
- Enabling the aforementioned remote criminals to launch attacks against your computer. These remote attacks may install other harmful programs, force your PC to become part of a Denial-of-Service attack or force your computer to perform self-harming actions.
The age of Spammit doesn't render the above attacks any less harmful, and any indication of a Spammit infection should be treated seriously. Removing Spammit is ideal when performed by security software that are updated and can scan your PC in Safe Mode, a mode which may halt Spammit's startup process.
