AsyncRAT

Posted: August 8, 2019

AsyncRAT is a Remote Access Trojan, which appears to have been developed in 'good faith' or at least this is what the original author states. According to the GitHub page where the Trojan's code is uploaded, it is not meant to be used for threatening purposes, and it is meant to serve an educational purpose. However, the list of features packed inside AsyncRAT's code quickly reveals that this tool can cause a lot of damage if it is used with a devious purpose in mind.

Public C# RAT Project Has Keylogger and Infostealer Modules

The AsyncRAT is a typical Remote Access Trojan that can be planted on a compromised system, therefore allowing the threat actor to carry out a wide range of tasks on the victim's computer. According to the description published on the RAT's page, it can allow the remote attacker to view, download, or upload files to the compromised host. It also possesses a keylogger module, as well as the ability to capture footage via the microphone or Web camera connected to the victim's computer. The author has also implemented an info stealer module that would enable the AsyncRAT to retrieve saved passwords from Web browsers, FTP clients or messaging services.

An Open-Source RAT may Enhance the Toolkits of Threat Actors

While there are much more flexible and functional Remote Access Trojans in the wild, the AsyncRAT may become a huge problem because its code is public and anyone can compile it, and start using it. In addition to this, more experienced cybercriminals can opt to use AsyncRAT's code as a foundation for their project, and then extend its features with their own modules. Thankfully, no samples of the AsyncRAT have been encountered in the wild yet, and reputable anti-virus products are able to detect and eradicate this Trojan as soon as it is introduced to a computer. We advise you to keep your computer safe from this threat and similar threatening programs by using a trustworthy and up-to-date anti-malware application.
