BitCoin Clipper

Posted: August 11, 2020

BitCoin Clipper is a threatening hacking tool that may run in the background of unsecured computers and hijack Bitcoin transactions silently by replacing the recipient's wallet address with one managed by the cybercriminals. This is a fairly simple piece of malware, and there are many variants of it being sold or advertised on underground hacking forums – fortunately, the BitCoin Clipper is rather limited in its functionality. Modern clippers are able to hijack multiple cryptocurrency transactions, but the BitCoin Clipper specializes in Bitcoin hijacks only.

The cybercriminals using BitCoin Clipper may opt to use various methods to propagate the threatening application. Since they need to target BitCoin users, it is very likely that they may promote it on forums, websites, and social media pages frequented by cryptocurrency enthusiasts.

There is no way to notice that the BitCoin Clipper is running on your computer unless you are using a good anti-virus tool. This threat will run silently and monitor the Windows clipboard for a text that is a valid Bitcoin wallet address. If it identifies that such content has been copied, it will replace the wallet with the one that the attackers have configured the BitCoin Clipper to use. This way, users may authorize a transaction to the BitCoin wallet of the cybercriminals unknowingly.

Staying safe from threats like the BitCoin Clipper can be achieved by using an up-to-date anti-malware tool, as well as by learning how to spot and avoid suspicious files. Never download installers and files from non-trustworthy and non-verified sources.
