Based on the same template as BKDR_VERNOT.A, BKDR_VERNOT.B is a backdoor Trojan that, like its close relative, uses a benign company's online data storage-based services to obfuscate the C&C server attacks, allowing BKDR_VERNOT.B to steal information and receive attack instructions with a minimal chance of being detected. In terms of the attacks that BKDR_VERNOT.B may launch against your PC, BKDR_VERNOT.B is as dangerous as any other backdoor Trojan, and SpywareRemove.com malware researchers heavily encourage using a trustworthy anti-malware application to delete BKDR_VERNOT.B before any sensitive information can be stolen.

When Blogging Goes Bad with a Hand from BKDR_VERNOT.B

Using a modified version of the same strategy that BKDR_VERNOT.A employed with Evernote, BKDR_VERNOT.B doesn't contact a malicious URL directly to use as a Command & Control server. Instead, BKDR_VERNOT.B contacts a Japanese blogging service, from which BKDR_VERNOT.B can upload stolen data (such as passwords or your system information), receive configuration instructions or process Web addresses from which BKDR_VERNOT.B can download and install other PC threats. Because the 'C&C server' that BKDR_VERNOT.B uses actually is a benign text-based service, some security programs may be unable to detect BKDR_VERNOT.B's attacks. SpywareRemove.com malware researchers also warn that BKDR_VERNOT.B will attempt to conceal itself from any direct observation by injecting itself into the memory process of another program.

The Vernot family's exploitation of unusual C&C server mechanics is innovative, but BKDR_VERNOT.B's major attacks still are in keeping with standard backdoor Trojan behaviors. SpywareRemove.com malware experts warn that BKDR_VERNOT.B is likely to be involved in part of or all of the following activities:

  • Downloading and installing other kinds of malicious software without your permission. Police Ransomware Trojans, specialized forms of spyware and rogue anti-malware products all are examples of BKDR_VERNOT.B's potential payloads.
  • Changing your computer's security settings in ways that reduce your safety both online and offline. Many of these changes may take place in the system Registry and may not display in other parts of your operating system's interface.
  • Renaming files arbitrarily.

The bulk of BKDR_VERNOT.B's functionality appears to be focused on downloading, unpacking, installing and launching a variety of malicious files. BKDR_VERNOT.B's logs, like everything else related to its behavior, are stored in its faux 'draft' blog entry.

Why You'd Better Not Let BKDR_VERNOT.B Get Away with Its Blogging Misdeeds

Due to the breadth of its overall backdoor functionality, BKDR_VERNOT.B can be complicit in highly-invasive attacks that steal confidential information or install high-level PC threats, and SpywareRemove.com malware researchers recommend removing BKDR_VERNOT.B as quickly as BKDR_VERNOT.B can be detected by any decent anti-malware application.

Since BKDR_VERNOT.B does take steps to reduce the chances of its being detected easily, SpywareRemove.com malware researchers also encourage updating your anti-malware software before you try to scan your PC for any possible BKDR_VERNOT.B infection. Keep in mind that since BKDR_VERNOT.B largely is dedicated to installing other PC threats, your system scans should be thorough and capable of detecting other PC threats that BKDR_VERNOT.B has a high chance of installing. BKDR_VERNOT.B's payloads may or may not show symptoms that will allow you to detect them once they're installed.
