bLeengo

Posted: August 30, 2017

bLeengo is a Web browser extension whose purpose is to enhance the user's Web searching experience by redirecting them to a different search engine automatically depending on the language they are searching in. By default, the plugin comes with pre-defined settings, which will, for example, take the user to Yandex.ru in case they use Cyrillic to type in their search term. Naturally, other languages (or alphabets) will lead users to other search engines. While this functionality might seem helpful on occasion, it is worth mentioning that the authors of bLeengo are probably using affiliated links to ensure that any users who take advantage of their extension will end up generating some money for the add-on's publisher. Usually, the monetization happens when the user is taken to a search engine and encounters ads that are affiliated with the bLeengo's publisher.

Although actions like these are not harmful, it is recommended to avoid extensions that attempt to exploit their users like that. In addition to the changes that bLeengo introduces, users also might notice that their default search aggregator will now redirect their searches through Eanswers.com before taking them to the search engine that they have configured bLeengo to use. This is another dubious action, which once again confirms that the publishers of bLeengo are exploiting their users to monetize their ads or boost the traffic of 3rd-party websites artificially.

Since bLeengo is categorized as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP), users should be able to remove it with the assistance of a credible cyber security application. However, this is not mandatory, and the extension can be uninstalled via your Web browser's integrated add-on manager manually. When bLeengo has been removed successfully, all changes it has brought to your settings should be reverted automatically.
