BrowserIO

Posted: September 20, 2017

BrowserIO is a browser add-on, which may modify the Web browser's settings to set Search.browserio.com as the user's default new tab page or homepage. Software that performs actions of this sort is not threatening, but it goes without saying that its presence on your computer could turn out to be slightly annoying. The case of BrowserIO is even a bit more special, because this extension aims to promote a website that might not yield legitimate results – the search feature found on Search.browserio.com does not use a popular search aggregator to generate the results page so that it is possible that users might be exposed to sponsored ads or modified results.

The installation of BrowserIO usually happens with the user's approval as we have not yet spotted BrowserIO being installed via shady tricks. Users might be tempted to install BrowserIO because it promises to provide them with an enhanced browsing and searching experience. This does not seem to be the case since it appears that the sole purpose of BrowserIO is to bring traffic to Search.browserio.com – a page that works but does not improve the searching experience of the users necessarily.

BrowserIO is categorized as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP), and users who wish to remove it can do so manually or with the aid of a credible anti-virus utility. Keep in mind that this software is not harmful so that not removing it from your PC will not put your online safety in harm's way. However, do keep in mind that the removal of BrowserIO is the quickest way to ensure that all changes that this extension applied to your settings will be reverted immediately.
