CoinCube Miner

Posted: May 22, 2018

The CoinCube Miner is a JavaScript-based cryptocurrency miner, which is meant to work behind the backs of the visitors who've opened the page loaded with the mining script. Unlike the users of CoinHive, those utilizing the CoinCube Miner rarely inform their visitors that their CPUs are about to be used to mine for various cryptocurrencies. In fact, it appears that this miner is almost never used on credible websites and, instead, the people behind it opt to use aggressive adware applications to load the pages that execute the CoinCube Miner silently.

The adware that brings the CoinCube Miner might be distributed via pirated software and software bundles, which might install not just the adware components but other annoying software as well silently. One of the adware pieces known to be linked to the CoinCube Miner is meant to launch a hidden copy of Google Chrome, which loads the CoinCube Miner hosted on the domain hxxp://de-mi-nis-ner2(dot)info. This page displays a fake Cloudflare CAPTCHA, which can't be bypassed and, in the meantime, it launches the CoinCube Miner, which will cause the CPU usage to go up to a 100%.

Unfortunately, restarting your PC or Web browser might not be enough to get rid of the CoinCube Miner since the adware linked to it will create an autorun entry to ensure that the unsafe Chrome process will be started alongside Windows. If you suspect that the reason why your Web browser is using a significant amount of CPU resources is a Trojan miner, then we suggest the use of a credible anti-virus tool to scan your computer for any potentially harmful software.
