'Enter a Product Key' Scam

Posted: August 18, 2016

The 'Enter a Product Key' scam involves a faulty piece of computer software that may lock the user's desktop by putting an 'Enter a Product Key' window on top of all other content. This window can't be closed, and it asks users to input their Windows product key to verify that their Windows installation is genuine. Keep in mind that Microsoft will never ask their users to input their product key like that, and any suspicious window that asks you do this should not be trusted. Even if you enter a valid product key, the 'Enter a Product Key' window will stay open and urge you to call 888-995-8019 for more assistance. This phone number is linked to an online hoax that asks users to pay for an updated Windows product key that can remove the 'Enter a Product Key' window. It is not difficult to reach the conclusion that the people behind 888-995-8019 are also the authors of the 'Enter a Product Key' scam, and they will not provide you with a working license key. Instead, they'll take your money and ask you to provide them with remote access so that they can enter the right product key.

They never give the product key directly, because it can be used by anyone having the same problem! The good news is that the 'Enter a Product Key' scam is poorly crafted, and malware researchers were able to recover the made-up code used to unlock the user's desktop and remove the annoying window. If you ever experience this problem, and the phone number mentioned in the window is 888-995-8019, then you should try to enter 951753 in the product key field. Never trust technical support services promoted via pop-ups that inform you of various computer problems and issues! Most of those technical support services are hoaxes, and trusting their words may lead to the loss of money and information.
