FakeFileOpener

FakeFileOpener is a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) targeting users of macOS systems. This PUP does not have an official website and, instead, its creators are likely to propagate it through fake downloads, updates, misleading advertisements and other deceptive content. The good news is that ending up with FakeFileOpener on your computer is unlikely to result in harmful consequences – this software does not engage in harmful behavior.

It may, however, set itself as the default application used to open dozens of files. This means that the next time you try to open a document, the operating system will try to run FakeFileOpener instead of your favorite document viewer. FakeFileOpener then abuses macOS' ability to search the Web for suitable file opening software. However, instead of being given legitimate proposals, FakeFileOpener will try to offer other Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs), adware or browser hijackers.

If you are experiencing random redirects to unknown download pages whenever you try to open a file on your macOS computer, then you should certainly look into the problem. Do not download any unknown software you are offered, and make sure to run a reputable macOS security scanner that will help remove FakeFileOpener or any other PUPs that may be responsible for this intrusive behavior.
