FluBot Android Malware

Posted: March 9, 2021

The FluBot Android Malware is a threat that has been identified just recently, after infecting over 60,000 mobile devices. The FluBot Android Malware campaign appears to be very active in Spain, and over 90% of infected devices are in this region. Allegedly, the criminals reach potential victims via fake SMS Messages urging the recipient to download and install an application that poses as a legitimate program linked to Google, DHL, FedEx, etc. Once the FluBot Android Malware is deployed, it will download a set of pre-made login screens that look identical to the ones of popular banks in Spain and other countries. If the users try to access a legitimate bank portal through their devices, they will see one of the fake login screens instead. Needless to say, any information entered in the fake website will end up being transferred to FluIBot's operators.

The attack explained above is not, by far, FluBot Android Malware's only feature. This malware also has the ability to intercept and collect one-time passwords, which many banks use as an extra layer of security. The threat also will hijack the user's contact list, and send bogus SMS messages to all contacts – potential victims are much more likely to open a file or URL sent by someone they know.

Cybersecurity experts are worried about FluBot Android Malware's potential reach because the campaign is spreading throughout all of Spain quickly – this malware project may turn out to be much more threatening if its creators start targeting other regions as well. Android users should protect their devices by using a trustworthy anti-malware application.
