Gameharbor.org is a gaming news site that recently has become linked to browser-hijacking attacks that redirect your browser to Gameharbor.org automatically. Although Gameharbor.org hijackers are not necessarily high-level threats, they may cause your Web browser to be exposed to other PC threats. Instead of uninstalling your Web browser or modifying its settings, use anti-malware tools to uninstall a Gameharbor.org hijacker, along with other threats that also may be associated with Gameharbor.org.

Gameharbor.org: An Unintended Harbor for Chrome Fans

Other than providing Russian news articles for the gaming industry, Gameharbor.org, as a website, has little content. To date, malware researchers' examinations have failed to provide any evidence of Gameharbor.org being used to attack PCs. However, 2014 has brought with its new year, new browser-hijacking problems, including at least one Gameharbor.org hijacker. Gameharbor.org hijackers specialize in modifying the Chrome Web browser, although the Registry-based attacks seen so far would be equally applicable to Internet Explorer or other Web-browsing applications. Along similar lines, the Gameharbor.org hijack campaign also has been restricted to Windows machines, although there is little preventing the campaign's authors from adapting the attacks to OS X or Linux systems.

The sole confirmed symptom of a Gameharbor.org hijack is Chrome being set to launch automatically with the Windows operating system's startup, and then loading Gameharbor.org in lieu of its normal homepage. Because these hijacks use Windows Registry exploits, normal browser settings are ineffectual at preventing them.

Taking Your Gaming News Back from Mother Russia

Gameharbor.org does not have the classification of a hostile website and does not distribute threats, but, unfortunately, its browser hijackers typically are installed automatically, without visible components, both of which may be traditional characteristics of threatening software. If your browser experiences the symptoms of a Gameharbor.org hijack (or a hijack for any other website), anti-malware tools should be used to uninstall all threats. The uninstallation should include unwanted changes to your Registry, which normally should be deleted along with the software, assuming you use appropriate system-scanning options.

Malware researchers have not finalized identification of the distribution methods in use for Gameharbor.org hijackers. Symptoms of this PC threat's installation currently are minimal. Nonetheless, most browser hijackers are tied to the presence of threats or unsafe file-downloading habits. Files you're uncertain of trusting with your PC's security can be scanned to detect probable installers for threats or Potentially Unwanted Programs, and, as a guideline, you may wish to avoid free software sites that offer potentially threatening downloads.
