GeneralCache

GeneralCache is a Possibly Unwanted Program (PUP) that combines the characteristics of  adware and browser hijackers. Since, in most cases, the users installed it unknowingly as a result of deceptive or misleading tactics, GeneralCache is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program.

The first symptom of GeneralCache being present on a Mac system is that it will start displaying various advertisements to the user, such as coupons, pop-up windows, surveys, etc. Clicking on such advertisements is a serious security risk as they may lead to unreliable websites or even start unwanted downloads. Furthermore, GeneralCache promotes the Safe Finder site, as well as a dubious search engine.

To achieve persistence, GeneralCache creates a new LaunchDemon on the Mac system. A new Device Profile also is created so that GeneralCache can apply changes to the settings of the user's Safari Web browser. The default search engine will be modified, and all search queries will be carried out through GeneralCache Search, which in turn displays a list of results taken from search.yahoo.com

While some users may find the features provided by GeneralCache useful, the risk of the application gathering information, as well as the annoyance of the numerous advertisements, shouldn’t be underestimated.
