How to Fix Windows Blue Screen of Death Errors

Posted: January 8, 2021

The Windows Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is one of the most infamous error screens, and it is always being associated with dire computer trouble. The good news is that these claims are not entirely true – while a BSOD error almost always results in a full computer crash, it does not necessarily mean that there are long-term issues to worry about. Regardless of this, it is still recommended to try and identify the source of the problem and then try to have it fixed (if it is possible.)

But how do you fix Windows Blue Screen of Death Errors on your own? This report encompasses some of the most common BSOD troubleshooting tips, which can help you eliminate current BSOD errors, as well as to prevent future ones from occurring.

Disconnect External Hardware and Peripherals

Removable hardware (external USB drives, USB sticks, Web cameras, etc.) may sometimes cause hardware issues and interferences that trigger BSOD errors. The first thing to do if you encounter such issues is to disconnect everything apart from your headphones/speakers, keyboard, and mouse. If the issue seems resolved, start connecting the external devices one by one, and test to see if any of them will again trigger the BSOD error.

Remove Recently Introduced Hardware or Applications

A common culprit when it comes to BSOD errors is recently installed hardware or software. For example, if you recently added more RAM to your computer, then you may have bought a faulty RAM stick. Or maybe you did not install it correctly, and it needs to be reseated. The same goes for software – if you had no trouble with your computer, but it started crashing when you installed a new game or software suite, then this might be the cause of the problem. Revert recent changes to your hardware and software if you start encountering BSOD issues.

Apply Microsoft Windows Updates

Windows updates aim to improve the security, stability, and functionality of your device. It is important to apply the latest updates immediately to make sure that you will not encounter any of the problems that these updates are meant to address. In the case of BSOD errors, make sure to activate Automatic Windows Updates and follow the instructions to complete the updating process.

Run the System Restore Utility

If everything else does wrong, then you may need to revert your Windows to an earlier date. The Windows utility called System Restore saves 'restore points,' which can be used to revert recent changes to your software. Look for 'System Restore' in the Start Menu and follow the on-screen instructions to run it. Make sure to back up recently saved documents and files, as they may be lost during the process.
