LuxNET RAT

Posted: September 18, 2020

The LuxNET RAT is an outdated Remote Access Trojan (RAT) that had an interesting surge in its activity recently. Apparently, a group of cybercriminals managed to crack the otherwise paid product and then started advertising it on online hacking forums. Because of the cracked copy of the LuxNET RAT, any cybercriminal can use it to craft their payload and then start distributing it to their intended targets.

The LuxNET RAT is a very threatening piece of malware because of its ability to grant remote access to the infected system. The criminals are able to use the LuxNET RAT implant to execute a wide range of tasks on the compromised system:

  • Use a file manager to edit, view, delete and collect files.
  • Manipulate the Windows Registry.
  • Tamper with Windows settings.
  • Set up a remote desktop connection.
  • Grab screenshots of the desktop.
  • Access the Web camera and capture videos or screenshots.
  • Record using the microphone.
  • Launch a keylogger.
  • Initiate a chat with the victim.
  • Command infected systems to perform a distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

The good news is that any reputable anti-virus product is able to detect and eliminate the LuxNET RAT with ease. You should not worry about this threat as long as your system is protected by a regularly updated anti-malware application. If you are not using such software at the moment, then we strongly suggest that you reconsider your decision because of the rapidly increasing number of threatening malware circulating on the Internet.

Since any cybercriminal can use the LuxNET RAT, it is safe to assume that its corrupted file may be found anywhere – pirated content, fake downloads, advertisements, social media, forum boards, etc. It is recommended to avoid interacting with such content if you are not using good anti-virus protection.
