Mac Repair Center' Pop-Up Scam

Posted: October 30, 2020

Online con artists often rely on technical support scams to collect money or information from their victims. However, it seems that some con artists are now experimenting with a 'live chat' tactic that is executed with the help of a website found at Contact-apple.net. As the name of the page suggests, it is meant to trick visitors into thinking that they are about to contact a legitimate Apple representative. However, the 'live chat' feature on the website will just get them to chat with the criminals behind the 'Mac Repair Center' pop-up scam.

The 'Mac Repair Center' pop-up scam is hosted on Contact-apple.net, but there are likely to be many other websites hosting the same content. Visitors of the page are told that their browser is plagued by pop-ups and advertisements immediately, and the productive course of action is to use the live chat feature to contact Apple support. Users who fall for the first stage of the tactic may end up hearing a lot of other false claims from the people impersonating the Apple support. It is not uncommon for the fraudsters to claim that:

  • The user's device is infected by threatening malware.
  • Hackers are attempting to collect data from the user.
  • The user's login credentials may have been compromised.
  • The user's computer may experience random crashes and stability problems because of a critical system error.

All of these statements are fake, but the con artists rely on them to convince the potential victim that they need to pay hundreds of dollars for useless services and products. If you encounter the 'Mac Repair Center' pop-up scam, you should know that there are no issues with your computer, and you do not need to contact anyone.
