The Melissa Virus is an older threat that has once seen its popularity create a massive scare among computer users around the world. Dating back to the 1990s, Melissa Virus has been an issue on the radar of major corporations and companies, including Microsoft who has battled the threat by shutting down email operations at one point.

Today, Melissa Virus remains somewhat of a lingering threat, that may access emails without permission where it could seek personal data.

As a data-seeking threat, Melissa Virus may be one day updated to be leveraged in ways to steal data from vulnerable computers. For now, it is important that computer users often scan their system using an antispyware or antivirus application to detect Melissa Virus and similar threats so they may be stopped by either preventing infection or removing them from an infected computer.
