Mist Stealer

Posted: June 23, 2020

The Mist Stealer is a tool that is being sold on hacking forums currently. Its author claims that it is an update to an outdated stealer software that was old, which also is sold publicly – they claim that the new version is better at evading anti-virus software and it supports most infostealing features that would allow the attacker to snatch even more sensitive data. Overall, the project does not appear to be very sophisticated, and this is why it is being sold at a relatively low price, probably – unfortunately, this makes it a very attractive product for cybercriminals who do not have the necessary expertise and experience to craft their own malware.

Since the Mist Stealer can be purchased by anyone, it is safe to say that its corrupted files may reside anywhere – fake downloads, email attachments, torrents, infected USB drives, software activators, etc. The best way to protect your system from infostealers like this one is to invest in a regularly updated anti-malware application.

If the Mist Stealer infects a system successfully, it may proceed to extract the following data from it;

  • Saved Web browser cookies.
  • Web browser history.
  • Web browser passwords and autofill forms.
  • Web browsers credit cards.
  • Various cryptocurrency wallets.

More popular infostealers pack a lot more features, but even this short list is enough to turn Mist Stealer in a threat that can cause a lot of damage. Victims of the Mist Stealer may not know that the malware exists on their system, and they only will find out about it when their accounts get misappropriated.
