NewPlayer is a Potentially Unwanted Program that installs itself to the Chrome, Internet Explorer and Firefox Web browsers. As a PUP, NewPlayer normally should be uninstalled immediately, but should not be confused with a threat that's deliberately designed to harm your PC. Even though malware experts haven't classified NewPlayer as a direct threat to your PC's safety, NewPlayer still may be an indirect threat and a nuisance, as a result of its advertisements and other browser changes.

NewPlayer: a New Add-On with Old Ideas for Exploiting the Web

PUPs may be marketed as supposedly beneficial applications, but, for all but the rarest of exceptions, have limited advantages and heavy drawbacks to their presence. In this respect, malware experts found NewPlayer breaking no new ground – since there are no legitimate benefits to using it with your browser. Drawbacks of NewPlayer's installation include:

  • Your Web searches may be redirected to unwanted sites at NewPlayer's discretion.
  • Your default browser homepage may be changed to one of NewPlayer's choosing.

NewPlayer hasn't been seen using these functions to distribute harmful Web content intentionally. On the other hand, PUPs like NewPlayer almost never filter their content adequately for potential risks, and may be responsible for the proliferation of fraudulent security software, phishing hoaxes and other attacks that may plausibly be disguised to resemble benign Web pages. The range of Web browsers currently modified by NewPlayer is being investigated by malware experts, although Windows-based browsers typically are at the highest risk for adware and browser hijacker-related issues.

Playing NewPlayer Off of the Stage

NewPlayer's company seems to be entirely aware of the lack of advantages to their software, which has a history of distribution in bundles with multiple, unrelated products. These products include DMUninstaller, AnyProtect, VO Package, DomaIQ and MediaPlayerEnhance, all of which may install NewPlayer and hijack your browser automatically. In some situations, you may avoid this intrusion by de-selecting the installation option during setup, although many bundles don't offer such options.

NewPlayer launches automatically with any affected browser and will continue to promote its third-party content while it's installed and active. The simplest means of removing NewPlayer is to close all browsers and scan your PC with appropriate anti-malware tools, which also may deal with related threats, such as Potentially Unwanted Programs. However, because of NewPlayer's preference for bundle-based distribution, malware experts also emphasize that unsafe Web-browsing and file-downloading behavior may be at the root of NewPlayer's presence on any PC. Free software sites that have not earned your trust normally should be verified by appropriate file-scanning security tools before you trust any applications you might acquire from them.
